GOSHEN, Ind. — Goshen Community Schools (GCS) hosted a Teacher Recruitment Fair on March 4 and 6, where current educators, new graduates, and anyone interested in a teaching career could stop by.

The event was an open house where people could come anytime between 3-7 p.m. to speak with the current GCS staff, learn about the open position details and benefits, and see if GCS may be a good fit for them.

“We are competing against many districts that, you know… everybody’s on the same boat, they’re trying to… make themselves as attractive as possible and so, what sets us apart is that we’re a tight knit community…we’re in the middle of a city, they’re very supportive of education and of Goshen Community Schools, we have great partnerships with the business world, we have many opportunities for kids,” said an Executive Director for Goshen Community Schools, Javier Jimenez.

Jimenez explained GCS is targeting secondary teachers, like middle and high school, with a specific focus on special education, “…which is a need for us, as it is for many of our neighboring schools, around the state, and probably the country,” said Jimenez.

Jimenez is correct, The Indiana Department of Education has more than 2800 unfilled positions listed on their statewide educator job board, and many of those are looking for specific teachers, like STEM or special education.

“We are the profession that makes all the other professions possible, and so, we are so much to our, not just to our students, but to our communities… our community depends on us to do a lot of things,” said Jimenez.
