ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart's Salvation Army has not received as many donations as expected this year. Tim Nauta, Major at the Salvation Army, says the donations are down thousands of dollars.
"Donations are down this year by about $35,000 over last year. So, we're worried that if it keeps trending, that we're going to end up about $80,000 short. And the reason that's concerning is because that will not allow us to help probably 175 families this coming year."
Throughout the year, the Salvation Army helps provide food, utilities and rent assistance among other things.
They noticed numbers were down just two weeks into their campaign before Thanksgiving. Nauta says the cause for this decrease could be many things. Between the government shutdown and families struggling to make ends meet, it's been a difficult year for many.
