UPDATE TWO: The Indiana DNR has called off the water search efforts Tuesday due to hazardous conditions again. Officials did conduct a land search for the child early Tuesday.

UPDATE: The Michigan City Police Department reports divers from their department, La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan City Fire Department, and Indiana DNR entered the water to search for the missing child.

The missing child was seen entering the water on the east side of the catwalk just south of the lighthouse. The child never resurfaced.

Authorities say a fishing charter boat and drones were used to assist in the search efforts.  A medical helicopter also responded to the area and remained on standby while first responders continued to search.

Officials say challenging water conditions significantly impeded search operations.

After hours of searching, dive efforts were suspended due to hazardous conditions posing a threat to the safety of responding personnel.

During the search, officials say three divers from MCFD and one from Indiana DNR sustained minor injuries.

Police say the investigation into the incident is ongoing and additional information will be released by the Indiana DNR when it becomes available.
