UPDATE: Shooting of sleeping two-year-old in Elkhart now being investigated by county homicide unit

UPDATE TWO: Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson released the following statement regarding the overnight shooting of a 2-year-old:

"This morning, I was briefed on the shooting that tragically injured a sleeping child. I am praying for her recovery, but we know she and her family are facing an incredibly difficult battle.

Investigators are working tirelessly to piece together the events that led up to this shooting and to identify those responsible, although our communities help would greatly assist their efforts.

UPDATE: The Elkhart Police Department announced the investigation is being taken over by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit.

In a statement, police say the county is taking over due to the "nature of the crime and the severity of the little girl's injuries."

Currently, no arrests have been made.

ORIGINAL STORY: ELKHART, Ind. -- A 2-year-old child was injured and taken to the hospital after getting hit by gunfire while sleeping in the early morning Tuesday.

An officer with the Elkhart Police Department responded to the 1000 block of W. Garfield Avenue after shots were heard firing around 12:58 a.m. Tuesday. There, the officer learned a 2-year-old girl sleeping inside a residence had been hit.

The girl's parents took her to Elkhart General Hospital before she was transported by med flight to IU Pediatric Trauma Center.

As of 8:38 a.m. Tuesday, the girl remains in critical condition.

No arrests have been made at this point, and the Elkhart Police Department is actively investigating.
