ELKHART, Ind. -- A ribbon-cutting was held Friday morning at Island Park and Lundquist Park in downtown Elkhart for a brand new free 18-hole disc golf course.
It was created by two residents of Elkhart who wanted a course in the downtown area and came to the Elkhart Parks and Recreation Department with the idea.
Course designer Marshall King said, "Elkhart had a course a number of years ago or a part of a course, and it didn't any longer. This is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. and other parts of the world. There's about 2000 courses going in every year. Elkhart didn't have one. There were some nearby. But this brings disc golf back to Elkhart."
Along with the course, there will also be disc golf workshops and competitions to drive people into Elkhart.
Superintendent for Elkhart City Parks and Rec. Jamison Czarnecki said, "The community chose this disc golf course for us and came to us with the idea of, 'Hey, what can we do downtown? There's a spot there.' We rolled around a few different parks, but we determined that this was a really unique location. They complimented some of the great disc golf that we already have around the county."
