Elkhart County Commissioners release blocked railroad crossings' findings
ABC 57 ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Commissioners Office released new data from a railroad crossing monitoring system in the county revealing how often stopped trains delay local traffic.
The announcement also mentions how a new online tool helps drivers and emergency responders avoid waiting at blocked crossings. This comes from Elkhart County partnering with Goshen-based Blocked Crossings, LLC to install technology that provides real-time information about whether crossings are open or blocked.
Officials say monitoring began in December 2024. The cameras tracked train activity at eight railroad crossings in Jackson Township, south of Goshen.
Hundreds of instances where crossings were blocked for over 10 minutes were found, officials said.
Crossings with frequent delays in 2025 included the following:
C.R. 50
- 305 blockages lasting longer than 10 minutes
- More than 163 total hours blocked
- Average blockage: 32 minutes
C.R. 42
- 175 blockages
- More than 152 total hours blocked
- Average blockage: 52 minutes
C.R. 29
- 84 blockages
- Nearly 61 total hours blocked
- Average blockage: 44 minutes
Elkhart County funded the initial installation of the monitoring system, including poles, power connections, and right-of-way access to support public safety operations.
County officials say ongoing operating costs are around $100 per intersection per month.
