Woman attacked with knife, 31-year-old Elkhart man arrested on three felonies

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department reports on Tuesday, July 2, around 3:18 p.m., officers responded to Cueramaro Supermarket, at 317 W Lusher Ave., regarding a physical altercation.

Police say the victim, a 30-year-old woman, reported that a known man, later identified as 31-year-old Charles Perez Herrera of Elkhart, had slapped her, choked her, threatened to kill her, and struck her with a knife.

The knife caused a laceration to her leg, which occurred in the 1100 block of Whitfield Court earlier that day.

The incident with the knife also occurred while the woman's juvenile children were present, according to the report.

Officers located Herrera and detained him at the supermarket.

Herrera was arrested and booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges of Criminal Confinement with a Deadly Weapon, a level three felony, Domestic Battery with a Deadly Weapon, a level five felony, and Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon, a level five felony.

On Wednesday, July 3, a judicial officer found probable cause for his arrest and set bond at $90,000.

This case has been forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review of formal criminal charges.
