Weeks long grain bin fire leads to 'explosion' on Friday injuring one person

CASSOPOLIS, Mich. -- The Central Cass Fire Department reports a fire started in a grain bin at Community Mills in Cassopolis on Nov. 3.

On Friday, Nov. 22, the insurance company, Chubb Agribusiness, was on scene to address the issue.

Officials say they drilled into the side of the grain bin which caused the fire to flare up and "explode."

The report states the explosion injured an insurance company employee.

He suffered burns to the face, hair, hands, and arms. He was then taken to the hospital.

The Central Cass Fire Department was called to the scene at 11:10 a.m.

Fire officials say the scene was still active as of 3:27 p.m., Friday, with about 20,000 bushels of corn remaining, some of it still burning.

Crews say they expect the corn to keep burning for "some time."
