Golf cart catches fire near BHHS football field Sunday

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- On Sunday morning, fire crews were called to Benton Harbor High School for reports of a fire near the track and football field.
"Upon arrival, BHDPS discovered a golf cart on fire that had spread to numerous pieces of machinery used to lay the new rubberized track," The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety said.
"The fire appears to have started in the golf cart engine compartment and is ruled accidental in nature."
Officials say the fire caused approximately $125,000 in damage to the equipment and track, but they are still hoping to have the track finished relatively soon as the loss will allegedly be covered by the contractor's insurance.

On Sunday, July 13, a small fire occurred at the Benton Harbor High School track due to a mechanical malfunction involving equipment being used during ongoing renovations. Thanks to the swift response of the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety, the fire was quickly contained, and no injuries were reported.
We are grateful to our local firefighters for their timely and professional response. The damage to the track was minimal, and the construction company has indicated that there are no foreseeable delays to the project timeline.
