Two dead following two-vehicle crash in Bertrand Township

BERTRAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Berrien County Sheriff's Office reports that deputies were sent to investigate a crash near the intersection of US 12 and South Redbud Trail in Bertrand township around 1:17 a.m. Saturday.
Deputies arrived to find a Jeep Wrangler on top of a Chrysler sedan, off the roadway.
First responders found that the driver of the Chrysler, identified as a 19-year-old male from Ames, Iowa, was trapped inside the vehicle upon arrival. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to the Sheriff's office, the driver of the Jeep, identified as a 36-year-old man from Edwardsburg, had been ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital in Niles but later pronounced dead.
The Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene and report that preliminary findings indicate the Chrysler was heading south on South Redbud Trail and failed to yield to the Jeep, which was eastbound on US 12.
According to deputies, alcohol may have been a factor in the crash and neither driver appeared to be wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
The incident remains under investigation.
