SOUTH BEND, Ind -- Star guard Sonia Citron goes down with an injury during the home opener win over Northwestern.
Notre Dame got out to a slow start trailing the Wildcats 8-0 but after a timeout from head coach Niele Ivey, the Irish went on a 15-0 run ignited by the freshman guard Hannah Hidalgo.
The Irish would lead 55-26 going into halftime. It was in the third quarter when star guard Sonia Citron suffered a leg injury that left her in tears while on the floor holding her right leg in pain.
At this time, Ivey says she's unsure of what took place to cause the injury.
"I just saw her on the ground. I didn't. I didn't see that. Yeah, we have no idea. I just saw her on the ground. So that ran over to her so I'm not sure it seemed like it was a collision. That's all I saw," Ivey said.
Before exiting the game, the junior contributed 23 points and trailing her was Hidalgo with 21 points, 6 steals and 5 assist.
"I mean, her energy I think she's done a really good job of just running the team learning a lot on the fly. She is a sponge so she's learning a lot each game just getting her. Her IQ of understanding the offense is growing each game," Ivey added.
