ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Department of Health announced new naloxone, or Narcan, boxes, will be placed at about two dozen locations throughout the county in the coming weeks.

Naloxone is a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses rapidly.

Officials say with the increase in synthetic drugs across the country, there's a need for the potentially lifesaving medication in the community.

So far in October, health officials say there've been dozens of opioid overdoses in St. Joseph County. They add many lives have been saved due to naloxone being administered though.

Officials say naloxone can be easily administered to a person experiencing an overdose but can't be self-administered.
