SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Fire Department reports seven firefighters were recognized by the Board of Public Safety on Wednesday for their actions during two recent incidents.

On July 11, six firefighters, Captain Jon Kirsits, Samuel Moon, Cesar Salinas, Justin Mika, Chad Stanley, and Francesco Lizzi, responded to an incident in the 600 block of W. Washington Street where a tree had fallen and struck two people.

The man on scene was unfortunately pronounced dead, while his wife was injured.

The crew on scene immediately began life-saving care and took the woman to the hospital.

Doctors later credited her survival to the swift and expert care provided by the firefighters in those first crucial moments following the incident.

Thanks to them she is expected to make a full recovery.

On June 17, firefighter Andrew Zwierzynski responded to a priority 1 drowning call where a 27-year-old man had been underwater for about 10 minutes in a pool with extremely cloudy water, making visibility nearly impossible.

Zwierzynski arrived and didn’t hesitate or put on special gear. Instead, he immediately dove to the bottom of the nine-foot pool, located the victim and pulled him to the surface.

Due to his quick actions, the victim survived.

For his heroism, Zwierzynski received a commendation and a challenge coin from the Board.
