ELKHART, Ind. -- A motorcycle rider has died following injuries sustained in an Elkhart crash on Thursday afternoon.
At 4:27 p.m., 67-year-old Billy Joiner was riding his 2011 Honda VT1 westbound on Old US Highway 33 near its intersection with Tower Road.
Another vehicle, a 2016 Nissan Frontier pickup truck, was stopped in traffic near this intersection.
Joiner crashed into the rear of the Frontier after following it too closely, police said.
According to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office, the motorcycle was excessively damaged.
Shortly after being transported to the Elkhart General Hospital, Joiner succumbed to his injuries, which included partial amputation of a leg.
The Frontier sustained rear end damage but its 21-year-old driver refused any medical treatment.
A crash investigation is still ongoing.
