Charges amended against suspect in New Prairie bus crash

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Prosecutor's Office confirmed to ABC57 that, following a blood test, 41-year-old Shawn Akison was found to have Fentanyl in his system at the time of the crash with two New Prairie buses.
Akison's charges have now been amended in the case.
Akison is now charged with Operating While Intoxicated Causing Catastrophic Injury - Level 4 Felony, Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Bodily Injury - Level 5 Felony, Criminal Recklessness - Level 5 Felony, Criminal Recklessness - Level 5 Felony, and Operating While Intoxicated- A Misdemeanor
The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports Akinson's now being held on an upgraded $20,000 cash-only bond.
Akison is now due in court Friday at 8:30 a.m. CT.
Akison was arrested after crashing into two New Prairie High School minibuses with a box truck on S.R. 2 on May 8.
Seven student athletes and two coaches were injured in the crash. One student,16-year-old Lucas Bradshaw, was airlifted to the hospital.
Bradshaw has been recovering ever since.
