Catalytic converters stolen from Michigan City school buses Monday night

UPDATE: Michigan City Area Schools released the following clarification regarding Wednesday's school day schedule:

Developmental Pre-K and the LPCCTE programs:

  • Developmental Pre-K (morning and afternoon sessions) will operate on a regular in-person schedule.
  • LaPorte County Career & Technical Education Programs will follow a synchronous eLearning schedule, aligned with the high school schedule.
  • Live Instruction: 8:30 - 11:45 a.m.
  • Break for Lunch: 11:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
  • Independent work, individual/small group instruction, and email support: 12:15 - 2:15 p.m.
  • Little Wolves Early Learning Center will operate on a regular in-person schedule.
  • Morning Developmental Pre-K will operate on a regular in-person schedule.
  • All Elementary Schools will operate on a regular in-person schedule.

Grades 7-12: Students will participate in synchronous eLearning. Teachers will provide live instruction and assignments online.

Middle School:

  • Live Instruction: 8:30 - 11:50 a.m.
  • Break for Lunch: 11:55 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.
  • Independent work, individual/small group instruction, and email support: 12:20 - 2:15 p.m.

High School:

  • Live Instruction: 8:30 - 11:45 a.m.
  • Break for Lunch: 11:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
  • Independent work, individual/small group instruction, and email support: 12:15 - 2:15 p.m.

Athletic events and practices will continue as scheduled.

ORIGINAL STORY: MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Michigan City Area Schools report that 21 school buses had their catalytic converters stolen Monday night.

The entire district is now on an e-learning day while the schools continue to assess how many buses were impacted.

MIchigan City Area Schools released the following statement via Facebook:

"Early this morning, our transportation staff discovered that a large number of Michigan City Area Schools buses had been vandalized. All schools will operate on an asynchronous eLearning day today, Tuesday, August 19.

  • Secondary students will receive assignments online from their teachers.
  • Elementary students without devices should complete homework previously sent home. Additional assignments will be provided once students return in person.
  • Little Wolves Early Learning Center will be closed.

We are working closely with the Michigan City Police Department as they investigate this incident. We will provide an update later when we have more information on how it may affect operations for the remainder of the week.

We know this sudden change is disruptive, and we appreciate your patience and support as we work through this unexpected situation."
