Reproductive rights expected to be major topic of Harris' DNC final speech
CHICAGO -- Tonight, Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to formally accept the nomination as the Democratic Party's candidate for President of the United States.
The buzz around the convention seems to indicate that reproductive rights are one of the main topics that will make its way into Harris' speech, and Hoosier delegates living under a statewide abortion ban will be listening.
They tell ABC57 their hope is for Harris to be the one to take abortion rights out of the hands of state leaders.
"It's an issue that needs to be talked to with your higher power, your pastor, your rabbi, with your family," said Indiana delegate Heather Pirowski. "Not Braun, not Beckworth, not the governor, not the attorney general."
Pirowski said it's hard to sit in a room full of delegates who came from legal states, where abortion rights aren't in question.
It's a topic that's being rallied around at the Democratic National Convention, especially yesterday with the theme being freedom, some of the most influential people advocating for these rights and giving their testimony. This included the CEO of Planned Parenthood Alexis McGill Johnson.
Planned Parenthood is not able to provide abortion care in Indiana, but they are still there to provide guidance for women seeking care.
"To the Hoosiers out there who support reproductive freedom, now is the time to start building back," Johnson said. "We can get back into the Constitution but it's going to take work and we're going to need to do it state by state."
In a press briefing Thursday morning, the press secretary for the campaign said Harris will be sure to address reproductive freedom tonight, and with the theme for tonight being 'For the Future', she will talk about how to flip the script for abortion rights in states like Indiana under her presidency.
