NOW: Penn High School boys’ tennis team heads to state for first time in 16 years

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Penn High School boys' tennis team is headed to Indianapolis to compete as one of eight teams that will battle head-to-head for the state championship.

After a warm send off from the support of fans, faculty, and student body, these underdogs plan to serve up some serious competition after the school's 16-year absence from state.

The Kingsmen played against the Spartans in the Homestead Semi-state,  coming out on top with a third set tiebreak.

Penn brought the heat winning 3 court singles making the score 3-2 beating a team ranked number 12 in the state.

This victory led them on the road to state where they will compete Friday morning at 10 a.m. against Cedar Grove High School.

If they win that match, they'll compete for a chance to be a part of the final four at the IHSAA tournament to compete for the state title.

The team hit the road Thursday afternoon, but before they hit the road they had to practice and prepare for their first match.

Quinn Lippert, a junior on team, spoke about how they've been preparing for the match.

"We have done a lot of preparation based on who was playing and we've trained all week to get ready for this match at Cedar Grove. They're excited to play them and they're a great team.” said Lippert.

Unfortunately, while the team is making history, their coach Eric Bowers is ending his boys' tennis era at the state championship tournament making their final match his last as head coach.

Supporters, families, and teammates had a parade Thursday afternoon to wish them luck on their journey.

“This is his last year you know, that just means we have to make this year count even more.” said Chris Chenn, a junior on the team.

Coach Bowers is ending the season with great memories and plans to coach the Penn High School girls' tennis team in March.
