Pedestrian dead after being struck by car in Niles

NILES, Mich. -- The Niles Police Department reports officers responded to the corner of Broadway Street and S. Third Street around 6:58 a.m., Tuesday, for a reported crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian.

Police arrived with other first responders to find 56-year-old Namita Smadder, of Niles, with serious injuries.

Smadder was treated on-scene before being taken to Corewell Health Niles Hospital. She was later transferred to Memorial Hospital South Bend, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators determined Smadder was attempting to cross Third Street at the southwest corner when she was struck by a vehicle, driven by 59-year-old David Roeder.

Roeder was attempting to make a right had turn from East bound Broadway Street to S. Third Street.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Accident Reconstruction Unit is assisting with the investigation.
