Ninety-year-old man struck, killed riding tricycle in Elkhart County Thursday

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A 90-year-old Elkhart County cyclist is dead Thursday afternoon after he was struck while turning into a business on S.R. 19.

The Indiana State Police are investigating the fatal crash between the cycle and a car that occurred in the 2100 block of North Main Street/ S.R. 19 in Nappanee around 12:35 p.m. 

"A 90-year-old male was riding a three wheeled bicycle northbound on S.R. 19 when it is alleged to have turned left to go into a business in front of a tan 2008 Hyundai that was traveling southbound," an ISP spokesperson said.

"The crash caused the cyclist to be ejected from the bicycle. Arriving first responders attempted life-saving measures on scene, but the cyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Authorities say the driver of the Hyundai, a 63-year-old Nappanee woman, was not injured in the crash.

"Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to be factors in this crash however toxicology tests will be completed as required by Indiana law on all parties involved in serious bodily injury and fatal crashes," ISP said.

"S.R. 19 was shut down between C.R. 150 and East Woodview Drive for this crash investigation. S.R. 19 reopened at 2:25 p.m."
