Multiple departments respond to St. Joseph house fire Sunday night

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. --- The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety reports they assisted the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety with a house fire in the 1500 block of State Street Sunday around 10:20 p.m.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a two-story home fully engulfed in flames, with heavy fire extending to a second home.

"Despite aggressive firefighting efforts, the initial [home] was a total loss," the St. Joseph Public Safety Department said.

The report states an aggressive fire attack held most of the fire to the initial house while the second home's fire stayed at the exterior of the home.

"During the incident, heat from the fire caused the neighboring house to the south of the original structure to ignite on its north side. Fire crews addressed this exposure, limiting the damage to water intrusion on the first and second floors and burn damage to the north-side roof," the SJPSD said. "The dollar amount of the loss for the neighboring structure has not yet been determined."

Lincoln Charter Township firefighters, the Benton Charter Township Fire Department, and the St. Joseph Charter Township Fire Department also assisted on scene.

"The fire was fully extinguished after a thorough and collaborative effort by all responding personnel," the SJPSD said.

Fire officials say crews also battled the cold and slippery conditions.

"The cause of the fire is currently under investigation," the SJPSD said. "No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported."
