MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday afternoon for what Mayor Dave Wood is calling one of the most impressive projects in Mishawaka history.
After nearly a decade of planning people finally got to check out the brand new, 220,00 square foot, $38 million dollar facility.
The Fieldhouse is home to a turf field, 12 pickleball courts, and 10 basketball courts that convert into 19 volleyball courts.
It is designed to become a national sports destination and is expected to generate a million visitors and 20,000 room nights a year.
That is just phase one of the project that Visit South Bend Mishawaka’s Executive Director says will be a game changer in the already large role youth sports tourism plays in the local economy.
“So now that we have this indoor facility, the quiet time of January February March when we're lacking and visitors out of town occupancy, we will be able to drive that through sports tourism, Thursday to Sunday every week,” said Jeff Jarnecke.
The facility will not only impact the local economy, but also local sports programs like NIVA Volleyball and 5 Star Basketball who will call the facility home and be able to host tournaments throughout the year.
