NOW: ’Groundbreaking Black Hoosiers’ traveling exhibit on display at Mishawaka Public Library through Saturday

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- In honor of Juneteenth, a piece of Indiana Black history is making a stop in Mishawaka.

The Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library is welcoming the "Groundbreaking Black Hoosiers" traveling exhibit, highlighting African Americans who helped shaped the Hoosier State.

The exhibition is now on display until Saturday June 21 in the Heritage Room on the main floor during library hours.

The self-guided exhibit, from the Indiana Historical Society, features barrier-breaking leaders like Madam C.J. Walker and Mary Bateman Clark.

Visitors will also find a permanent tribute to the Powell family, one of the first African American families in Mishawaka.

"We offer a beautiful facility and it's in a beautiful space. This space here, the Heritage Room, reflects history within our community. There's going to be a lot of valuable information that the display itself is going to be able to provide so can be a learning experience, in addition to an opportunity to celebrate the significant contributions African Americans have made," Director of Operations at Mishawaka -Penn-Harris Public Library Dena Wargo said.
