LaPorte County Clerk\'s Office - Quayshawn Jerkins Mugshot

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- A probable cause affidavit from La Porte County Superior Court states 25-year-old Quayshawn Anthony Jenkins has been charged with two counts of Murder, both felonies, and one count of Robbery, a Level 5 Felony.

On Saturday, July 12, officers with the Michigan City Police Department were dispatched at around 1:26 a.m. to a BP Gas Station on 1302 East Michigan Blvd. in response to a shooting incident.

A crowd had also formed around the gas station, having previously been cleared out from Pullman Park and then the Grace Street area, where some individuals had shown hostile behavior and been arrested. The crowd was soon dispersed from the gas station.

The victim, Jordan Rose, was located on the ground on the east side of the gas station, appearing to be unconscious and having agonal breathing.

The deputy and officer on the scene provided Rose with medical treatment, locating the gunshot wound that went through the right side of his chest with no exit wound. EMS arrived, took over life-saving care, and transported him to Franciscan Health.

Rose succumbed to his wounds at around 2:28 a.m. An officer collected his clothing, discovering a firearm gun light inside the shorts, but no firearm.

At the scene of the crime, one witness reported that she arrived at the gas station with Rose and two other friends after having been pushed out of Pullman Park. She and the two others were in a friend's car when they heard the gunshot, a noise that the witness first believed to be fireworks.

Rose's girlfriend reported hearing the gunshot, turning around, and seeing Jenkins pointing a gun at Rose, with Rose holding his side.

Video surveillance at the gas station showed that Rose approached Jenkins and a group gathered by a black GMC. After some discussion, Jenkins looked down, Rose took two steps back, and Jenkins punched Rose.

The two men, alongside another member of Jenkins' group, disappeared off camera view before others on camera duck down and move away, after which Jenkins and his associate walk to the back of the black car and Jenkins placed an object in his waistband before walking out of view. Another witness on the scene reported Jenkins was holding a black handgun.

At the autopsy, a bullet was retrieved from Rose's body, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Rose's girlfriend later reported he was licensed to carry and had his gun on him that night. The same gun was seen in Jenkins' possession that night.

Another witness reported that Jenkins claimed Rose pointed his gun at him and that he saw Rose "clutching his gun." He confirmed that Jenkins punched Rose and stated that the gun fell to the ground before Jenkins picked it up. Then, he heard the gunshot.

Other witnesses report that Jenkins told the surrounding crowd that Rose shot himself.

Jenkins refused an interview without the presence of a lawyer.
