Man faces several charges after headbutting officer and injuring hospital security guard

Malik Edwards

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Police Department reports a man is facing several charges following an incident on Sunday which left a hospital security guard in need of knee surgery.

Malik Edwards is charged with Battery Resulting in Moderate Bodily Injury, Battery Against a Public Safety Official, Driving While Suspended Knowing Violation and Prior Conviction within 10 Years, two counts of Resisting Law Enforcement, Criminal Mischief, Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated with Prior Conviction within 7 Years.

The report for Sunday's incident states an SBPD officer on patrol was sitting in his patrol car facing east at the intersection of Western Avenue and Olive Street when a vehicle heading in the opposite direction stopped beside him.

The driver told the officer a man was sleeping behind the wheel of a blue Jeep just south of the intersection.

The officer said he witnessed a man, later identified as Edwards, leaning back in the driver's seat appearing to be asleep.

Authorities say as the officer pulled up behind the Jeep, it began to roll forward onto the curb before stopping when the front tire became wedged into a post.

The report goes on state officers banged on the driver's window until Edwards woke up. Officers then yelled at Edwards to turn the Jeep off and put it in park, which he did.

He then handed officers his keys and exited the vehicle without police telling him to do so.

Police say Edwards smelled of alcohol, his speech was slurred, made repetitive commands, and was aggressive and hostile toward police.

Authorities say as they were running his information, Edwards began walking away.

Police say he ignored one officer's command to stop until another officer detained him.

While an officer was attempting to place Edwards in the backseat of a patrol car, police say Edwards stated, "I'm not getting in the car, bro. I'm not getting in the car!" and forcefully pulled away from the officer.

Edwards then continued to struggle with two officers before being put in the backseat and refusing to put his feet in the car, locking his legs and pressing against an officer.

After several minutes, they got him into the backseat, at which point officers read Edwards the Indiana Implied Consent Warnings which he refused to confirm or deny if he would submit to a chemical test.

Edwards was then taken to Memorial Hospital, where he became angry in the backseat of the patrol car, yelling, screaming, and banging his head against the window. All of this occurred as the officer in the vehicle drafted and submitted the search warrant for Edwards' blood draw.

The report states Edwards then twisted himself upside down and banged his heel against the camera inside the patrol vehicle, resulting in damage.

Several hospital security officers and police officers were needed to take Edwards into the hospital for the blood draw.

The report goes on to state it took multiple Memorial police staff, security staff, and healthcare staff to take his blood draw as he continued to struggle.

Police say the results of the chemical blood test are pending.

Court documents state as Memorial police and security officers attempted to remove Edwards' handcuffs so he could use the bathroom, he headbutted Memorial police captain.

When officers attempted to take Edwards to the ground, he continued to struggle, and as they took him down, police say his resistance caused a Memorial security officer to smack his left knee against the toilet.

The officer's knee locked up and he was unable to walk from the room. The officer was evaluated by doctors, who determined he would require knee surgery.
