Man charged with four counts of Child Molesting

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Court documents from St. Joseph County state 21-year-old Mario Smith has been charged with two counts of Child Molesting where defendant is at least 21 years of age and two counts of Child Molesting - Fondling or touching with child under 14, following an investigation.

A detective with the South Bend Police Department was assigned to the investigation after receiving a call from the Department of Child Service on April 14 regarding a report of alleged child abuse or neglect.

Police say the report alleged an 11-year-old child was sexually abused a couple years ago.

The detective then brought the victim in for a forensic interview. The victim told the detective Smith sexually abused them on multiple occasions.

The victim told authorities Smith made them perform various sexual acts.

The SBPD detective then conducted a recorded interview with Smith at the Special Victim Unit, where he was read his Miranda Rights and agreed to speak.

Smith admitted to the detective that the victim would touch his genitals on several occasions.

Documents state Smith also admitted the victim had performed various sex acts on him.

Court documents state Smith said these activities had been going on “severely” for about a month and admitted that the most recent time something happened was April 13.
