Man arrested for injuring officer while attempting to grab taser

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Documents from the St. Joseph County Superior Court reveals 35-year-old Dmartaz Cole was arrested and charged with Disarming a Law Enforcement Officer Taking a firearm or weapon from an officer, a Level 5 Felony, Battery w/ Bodily Injury to a Public Safety Officer, a Level 5 Felony, and Criminal Trespass, a Misdemeanor, following an incident from Aug. 16.

Cole's initial court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 11.

The South Bend Police Department reports on Aug. 16 officers responded to the Phillips 66 gas station on Western Avenue due to a trespassed man being on the premises.

Officers arrived and located the man, identified as Cole, on the premises, at which point police retrieved the trespass paperwork from the store and went to detain him.

Police say Cole began to fight with officers.

At one point Cole allegedly grabbed an officer's taser resulting in the officer's finger being bent backwards. Cole was unsuccessful in taking the taser.

The officer was in pain at the time, and the injury was documented and photographed.

After being tased multiple times, Cole was taken into custody.
