SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Documents from the St. Joseph County Superior Court reveal 19-year-old Jy Keim Knight was arrested and charged with Resisting Law Enforcement def. knowingly or intentionally flees, a Misdemeanor, Armed Robbery-Taking property by force or threatening use of force while armed (Attempt to Commit), a Level 3 Felony, and Armed Robbery-Taking property by putting someone in fear while armed with a deadly weapon (Attempt to Commit), a Level 3 Felony, following an incident on Aug. 16.

Knight's initial hearing is Sept. 2.

The South Bend Police Department reports an officer pulling into the Mobil Gas Station at 502 S. Michigan St. heard gunfire on Aug. 16.

Police say the shots came from the parking lot near a Chevrolet Suburban. The officer exited his patrol car and began walking toward the sounds. The officer observed a Black man holding a handgun which he noticed wasn't in the firing position.

The man was identified and informed the officer a shirtless young Black man in gray sweatpants and red shoes with a crossbody bag, later identified as Knight, had tried to rob him.

The victim said he was in his Suburban on the phone with a friend when at one point he asked the friend on the phone "Yo, what's up?"

The victim said Knight, who had been standing near the front of his vehicle, became aggressive towards him and said, "Are you talking s*** to me?"

The victim believed Knight may have thought he was addressing him. The victim then handed the pistol to the officer before pointing in the direction Knight ran.

The victim said he had exited his vehicle to tell Knight to get away from him. That's when Knight allegedly reached into the crossbody bag and took out a handgun.

The victim said Knight pointed the gun at him and said, "Give me yo s***. Give me yo car." The two then began wrestling for the weapon.

The victim got the gun and got back into his vehicle. While trying to start the vehicle, the victim accidentally fired the gun. Police found evidence of a projectile hitting the man's windshield.

The victim said that's when he saw the officer pull into the parking lot. He then got out of the Suburban to alert the officer.

Documents state that as the victim went around to the driver's side rear, Knight attempted to reach for the gun again. The gun then discharged a second time, after which Knight fled.

More officers arrived and found Knight crouching by a dumpster in an alley to the east of the Michigan and South Street intersection.

Knight then fled south while ignoring commands to stop. A chase ensued during which Knight was tackled after he reached for his waistband, a common place to keep a weapon.

Knight had abrasions on his left cheek, right eye, and right shoulder so he was taken to Memorial Hospital. While at the hospital, Knight said, "I was being talked about and assaulted, and I pulled out a weapon."
