Man arrested after hit-and-run with utility pole

Jacob Pedraza

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Court documents from St. Joseph County reveal 26-year-old Jacob Pedraza has been charged with Obstruction of Justice, a Level 6 Felony, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, a Misdemeanor, and Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun, a Level 5 Felony, following an incident on Sept. 9.

On Sept. 9, South Bend police responded to a report of a man crashing into a utility pole on Lincolnway before leaving the scene.

Authorities arrived on scene to find a downed utility pole and a disabled vehicle nearby.

Bystanders identified the driver as possibly Hispanic and stated he fled the area.

One witness told police he was driving for Uber and arrived at the scene of the crash right after it happened.

The witness said a man flagged him down and stated he was a felon. The witness stated before the man fled, he'd been digging around nearby bushes.

The witness also provided police with cell phone video he'd taken. Police then inventoried the vehicle and found an unloaded handgun.

When police searched the bushes, they found a second handgun that was loaded.

I&M Power was called to deal with the utility pole, and police were notified a short time later that a man was banging on the front doors of the South Bend Police Department, stating he'd been in a crash on Lincolnway.

That man was identified as Pedraza and was taken to the hospital.

Authorities interviewed Pedraza who stated that he was a passenger in the crash.

Police said there were seat-belt marks on Pedraza's neck, which indicated that he would've been the driver.

Notably, the vehicle was registered to Pedraza's mother. He stated it was previously hers.

Police then learned Pedraza has a felony conviction for Carrying a Concealed Weapon in Berrien County, Mich.
