New Indiana deer hunting laws take effect

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Deer hunting season is upon us and with that comes some changes to Indiana deer hunting laws. These laws take effect Sept. 15. A new antlerless bag limit of six across all deer seasons and the use of crossbows are now allowed with an archery license.

When going hunting it is necessary to follow hunting regulations. Always treat a gun like it is loaded and make sure to wear protective gear and be aware of your surroundings.

Hunters can also now use rifles with a centerfire cartridge that has a bullet diameter of 0.219 inches or larger on both public and private land.

With these extended distances, Tevin Tomlinson, a Conservation Officer, advises you need to watch where your bullet goes always but especially now with these extended distances.

Tomlinson explains, “with some of these new rifles that are legalized, they shoot very high feet per second. Make sure that you know what your target is. Make sure you know what is beyond your target, because you as the hunter, as a sportsman, are responsible for that bullet and what happens down range.”
