STEVENSVILLE, Mich. -- Lakeshore High School has implemented a pilot program to cater to non-traditional students that may not succeed in a traditional learning environment.

This program was developed after hearing the needs from students and a couple administration meetings that highlighted at least eight to 10 students each school year that struggle in the classroom.

Seniors and juniors who experience credit deficiencies or have personal or business obligations restricting their availability during the school day will be priority for the program.

Courses will be virtual, but the students will take assessments and schedule in-person meetings on campus.

Students will always have access to their instructors and administrators to receive emotional and academic support during their enrollment.

Administrations will hand pick students based on their availability and credits needed to support those students who would benefit from earning their diplomas virtually.

Lakeshore High School Counselor Micheal Clark, parents, and students are eager to be a part of a teaching model that works for everyone.

“Traditional education may work for a lot of kids, but it doesn't work for everyone. I would encourage schools and educators to kind of look at what that looks like and how to meet the needs for those students that maybe that traditional setting doesn't work, and it looks different in every community.”

If you are a student interested in enrolling in a program where you can complete up to six classes a semester, visit the Lakeshore High School website for enrollment opportunities.

Eight students and two instructors will attempt a successful model to keep students on track for graduation and not lose them to other schools that have these flexible programs.

Feedback and the success of the program will be the deciding factor in whether it will expand to be available for students in the future.
