SAINT JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Saint Joseph County, here in Indiana, is being recognized for its efforts to help those experiencing a mental health crisis.
Today, the 'County Crisis Prevention Team' was awarded a Gold Certification through CIT International, an organization made up of law enforcement agencies, mental health professionals, and the families of those who have struggled over the years.
The County Team states it's an honor to have the gold seal of approval when it comes to helping vulnerable people get real help, instead of going to jail.
"It was quite the process. It took an application process, several years of review and regular conversations, and so we were really excited to hear that we earned gold status. So that's really exciting for the work that everyone has put in this stakeholders, law enforcement, mental health, community," stated Vice President of Adult Case Management and Housing Services at Oaklawn Cindy Schulz.
County officials say the certification was the result of a team effort and reaffirms their commitment to helping people going through crisis.
