One arrested in connection with multiple thefts in Van Buren and Kalamazoo Counties
VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- Over the last several months the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department has been working with the Michigan State Police to investigate a series of thefts, including storage unit break-ins, trailer thefts, and residential burglaries.
On Jan. 29, a break-in occurred at a home in Decatur Township, where items were stolen. The homeowner’s surveillance cameras captured the suspect and his vehicle, which was shared on social media, prompting further investigation.
On Jan. 30, the VBCSO received an anonymous tip about the suspect and their location about one mile into Kalamazoo County.
Deputies set up surveillance and observed the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop as the vehicle was leaving the residence. The suspect then fled on foot.
The suspect was then arrested trying to get inside a neighbor's pole barn through a window.
The suspect was wearing the same clothes that were seen in the surveillance footage from the Decatur Township burglary. A search warrant was executed at the suspect's residence, where authorities recovered stolen property from several storage unit break-ins.
Among the stolen items was a significant amount of sports memorabilia stolen from an army veteran’s storage unit. Those items have since been returned to his family.
The VBCSO and Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office are continuing their collaboration and will be forwarding their findings to the prosecutor's office for potential charges. Additional charges of resisting arrest and drug possession are expected.
Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and consider utilizing security systems to help identify and apprehend criminals.
