Hurricane Debby update
The latest tropical depression has been causing quite the stir over the weekend, with landfall expected later this morning. Just because the eye hasn’t reached the coast yet though, doesn’t mean its effects haven’t been felt, with Florida already experiencing heavy rain through most of the overnight. Debby is expected to continue to the northeast through today, but slowly, likely reaching the Atlantic coast on Tuesday before potentially making a left turn and heading towards the Carolinas.
If we see remnants of Hurricane Debby really depends on what is happening in the upper atmosphere. First, we must understand that the atmosphere is constantly trying to reach a state of balance, and due to the general airflow of the earth. If there is a large low pressure center on the surface, there is a high pressure center in the upper atmosphere. I also talked about ridges and troughs in the upper atmosphere a couple weeks ago, and what we are looking at now is if a trough that is over Ohio moves east, the hurricane will be drawn into it, and it just depends on how far east it goes to see if it will affect us. Right now, I would say we likely won’t see any rain, but we will likely see calmer conditions. The jet stream is angled for us to be seeing cooler, drier air from up north as we go through this week, and that could bring more wildfire smoke as well.
