Gov. Braun signs law requiring schools to have cardiac emergency response plan for events

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Indiana Governor Mike Braun signed Indiana House Bill 1515, which requires all schools to have a cardiac emergency response plan for all events, into law Tuesday.
In 2013, 17-year-old Jake West died of cardiac arrest on the La Porte High School football field. Jake's mother, Julie West, then began the Play for Jake Foundation to promote safety at school events for heart-related emergencies.
Julie was at the signing in Indianapolis along with members of the American Heart Association.
The new law requires an automated external defibrillator be at every venue in which students have an increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
It also requires that schools create venue-specific action plans to respond to cardiac emergencies.
“Indiana is the latest in a growing number of states nationwide that are moving to better prepare schools and school athletic programs to respond to cardiac arrests with the creation of cardiac emergency response plans,” said Christina Cesnik, Indiana government relations director for the American Heart Association. “More than two dozen states have passed these laws, with several more expected to be signed by governors in the coming days.”
