LINCOLN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Friday that 54-year-old former Lincoln Township Police Department Detective Lieutenant Johnathan Chase of Stevensville was arraigned Wednesday in the 5th District Court in St. Joseph for 11 felonies for allegedly falsifying salvage vehicle inspections.

Chase is charged with eight counts of False Certification, two counts of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime, and one count of Misconduct in Office.

“Salvage vehicle inspections are vital to protecting residents from stolen or unsafe vehicles on our roads,” Nessel said. “When law enforcement officers abuse their authority and compromise that process, they not only betray public trust but also put innocent owners at risk. I appreciate the Michigan State Police for bringing this matter to our attention, and we will continue to hold those who misuse their positions accountable.”

Authorities say salvage vehicle inspections are done to ensure vehicles extensively damaged or reconstructed with parts from other sources are safe and their components aren't traced to stolen vehicles.

Officers must certify the parts' origins.

Documents state Chase was the sole officer responsible for salvage vehicle certifications within the Lincoln Township Police Department.

Chase reportedly submitted falsified salvage inspection forms to the Michigan Department of State.

Chase's next court appearance is scheduled for Halloween.

The Lincoln Township Police Department released the following statement regarding Chase:

"Former Police Officer Johnathon Chase was arrested on multiple charges from his activities as a salvage vehicle inspector. These activities occurred while working supplemental employment off duty. No taxpayer funds were involved or misappropriated as part of this supplemental employment township officials confirmed.

Mr. Chase retired from Lincoln Township Police Department in May of 2024. The Lincoln Township Police Department no longer participates in the salvage vehicle program."
