Elkhart residents react to Martin's Supermarket mass shooting

Police told us one officer was released from the hospital late Monday night with at least one of them taken to Memorial in downtown South Bend. The other officer remains in the hospital but in stable condition.
Bystanders, many of which told ABC57 they are regulars at Martin's, say this is too close to home.
"I've built a relationship with a lot of employees here; I've been shopping here for years. They didn't do nothing. What did they do to deserve what happened here tonight?" Patrick Dollinger said.
The shooting began around 5:30 p.m. last night inside of the Martin's. The officers later approached the suspect outside the store before gunshots were exchanged.
Quentyn Matheson says he walks by the store every day and said he is shocked something like this could happen in his own neighborhood.
"It's sad. It's a sad world we live in, too; it's just people got to put the guns down."
Jasmine Diver, a resident of River Point West Apartments, says she witnessed the events unfold.
"I caught the very tail end of, like, right when he dropped, and it was, I've never seen something like that before. It was very unexpected. It was very scary."
The names of the victims, the suspect, and the officers are not being released at this time.
The Elkhart County Homicide Unit was activated and will be handling the investigation. Indiana State Police are also providing investigation assistance.
Police ask for patience, saying they'll release more information as they're able.
Congressman Rudy Yakym (IN-02) released the following statement regarding the shooting:
"Our hearts are with the victims and their families after last night's devastating incident in Elkhart. Our team remains in contact with local and state authorities and will continue to offer our full support as the investigation unfolds.
I am so grateful for the brave officers who ran into harm's way in order to protect the innocent shoppers and am praying for their continued recovery. We are forever indebted to our public safety officials for their strength in times of tragedy.
