Elkhart expands city boundaries following city council's approval of annexations

ELKHART, Ind. -- The City of Elkhart announced its boundaries will expand following the Elkhart City Council's approval of two voluntary annexation ordinances on Monday night.

The annexation includes two parcels of vacant land. One is located on Greenleaf Boulevard and the other is at the east end of Vernon Avenue.

City officials say the annexation was requested by the property owner and will make way for a residential development consisting of 19 single-family homes.

“These homes along with other select groupings of homes continue to add to the housing shortages that we continue to address,” said Mayor Rod Roberson.

Ordinance 25-O-21 was also unanimously approved. This ordinance includes the voluntary annexation of the area commonly referred to as Elkhart East Areas C and E, located at the intersection of C.R. 6 and C.R. 17.

Officials say this annexation includes Casey's gas station, the land north of it, and the RV/MH Hall of Fame.

“This annexation is being driven in response to the developers' request to have a higher level of services that will allow the area to continue to grow economically in the future. And this annexation aligns with the city's annexation study completed in 2024,” said Mike Huber, Director of Development Services.

The proposed Ordinance 25-O-20 was approved unanimously.
