Community chimes in on City of La Porte Comprehensive Plan
LA PORTE, Ind. — The City of La Porte hosted an open house Wed. evening at the La Porte Civic Auditorium, where the community gathered to give feedback on the city’s 20-year Comprehensive Plan focused on growth and development.
The City of La Porte Community Development and Planning Director, Craig Phillips, explained communities should consider adopting a master plan every 10 to 15 years, but the City of La Porte hasn’t had their own since the mid 90s.
“We partnered with the county, with Laporte County previous to this to do our Comprehensive Plan together the last go around, but our communities have evolved and changed substantially enough that we felt it was time to consider doing our own again,” said Phillips.
Phillips said phase one of the plan was focused on gathering information and data on the city’s existing conditions. At this meeting, they had some initial recommendations focused the potential land use maps, shared the goals and objectives of the plan’s other elements like utilities and quality of place, and received written feedback from community members on what changes to the plan they would like to see.
Philips explained when a city has a master plan, it allows access to grants and funding for economic development and environmental restoration they otherwise wouldn’t be able to apply for, while also paving a path to progress the elements residents need to thrive.
“Housing is very important to our community. It’s one of our major priorities going forward… how we grow and develop from a housing standpoint… but land use, transportation, growth, economic development, all those things are critical to the future of the community,” said Phillips.
