Cass County Sheriff releases statement regarding chaotic confrontation with outgoing prosecutor

Cass County Sheriff Clinton D. Roach

CASS COUNTY, Mich. -- A verbal confrontation broke out between Cass County Sheriff Clinton D. Roach and former Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz just prior to a press conference by Fitz about his resignation and the fact there will be no prosecutors in the county as of June 1.

Roach released the following statement regarding the incident:

"On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, Undersheriff Tim Schuur and I along with other individuals arrived at an event we understood to be a press conference, which is generally open to the public and media. Upon entering the venue, an individual at the door physically placed his hands on me and instructed me to leave. I told him to remove his hands, or he would be arrested.

I was then approached by Victor Fitz, the former prosecutor of Cass County, and was told the event was private. I asked if it was a press conference and he again told me it was a private event. He told me if I did not leave, he would contact Michigan State Police. During this interaction, profanity was shouted by an individual outside the building. This individual is a private citizen and not an elected official of Cass County.

The residents of Cass County should be concerned when a former elected official convenes what was publicly perceived to be a press conference, while limiting access and using the platform to make accusations against current elected and appointed officials without allowing for transparency or open dialogue, so that the public can have the opportunity to listen to both sides, gather information, and draw their own conclusions as to what is occurring in our County.

Despite recent public rhetoric and controversy, the Sheriff's Office remains focused on maintaining public safety, professionalism, and stability within our community."
