California investigation leads to St. Joseph County man arrested for Human Trafficking

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department reports the Tracy, Calif. Police Department contacted their Warrants Division on Monday for assistance in locating 37-year-old Benjamin L. Lawless, a St. Joseph County resident.

Police say Lawless was under investigation in California after allegedly contacting a minor and arranging for her travel to Indiana.

California authorities then secured an arrest warrant.

The SJCPD Warrants Division, alongside the U.S. Marshals Service, FBI, St. Joseph County Special Victims Unit, and the Mishawaka Police Department, located and arrested Lawless without incident in the 1700 block of Home Street in Mishawaka.

Lawless was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail on charges out of California, including Human Trafficking, two counts of Contact with a Minor for Sexual Offenses, Using a Minor for Obscene Matter, and Activity Involving Material Depicting Sexual Conduct.

Lawless will remain at the SJC Jail until extradition to California.
