UPDATE: Body recovered from St. Joseph River Wednesday identified, investigation ongoing

UPDATE: The Indiana Department of Natural Resources announced the body recovered from the St. Joseph River Wednesday morning has been identified as 41-year-old Travis Bird of Mishawaka.

Bird was located in the area in about eight to 10 feet of water.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the incident.

ORIGINAL STORY: SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A man has died following a water rescue call in the St. Joseph River on Wednesday. 

The South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to the water rescue near the 300 block of East Colfax Avenue at 7 a.m.

Officials said that a tenant nearby reported hearing yelling and seeing a man in the water just behind a restaurant in downtown South Bend. 

The tenant was able to help firefighters identify the last known location of the victim in the river. 

The South Bend Fire Department's swiftwater personnel entered the water and found the victim in about 8 to 10 feet of water. 

The male victim was pronounced dead on scene and officials said there was fishing gear found nearby. 

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources will be taking over the investigation.
