KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana State Board of Animal Health has announced a case of avian flu has been confirmed in a Kosciusko County chicken in a flock of 23,700. 

The report states the virus was found in a commercial table egg pullet which, according to federal code, is a young hen, typically under one year old, raised for the purpose of producing eggs for commercial consumption.

"As part of existing avian influenza response plans, federal and state partners are working jointly on additional surveillance and testing in areas around the affected flocks," the ISBAH said.

"The United States has the strongest avian influenza surveillance program in the world, and USDA is actively working with its partners to look for the disease in commercial poultry operations, live bird markets and in migratory wild bird populations."
