Elkhart holds annual Memorial Day parade

ELKHART, Ind. -- A day to honor the fallen and remember why we gather today.

Elkhart’s annual Memorial Day parade bringing people of all ages together.

A way to get outside and come together to commemorate those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

Whether you're one of the younger paradegoers...

"What is today all about, girls?

The people who died for our country!

That helped fight for us to be free?

Yeah!" Said Myla and Mylah, both 5 years old.

Or someone who's been around the block a few times...

"It makes being in the service important," said James Farrand, Air Force veteran of 20 years.

The goal of today was clear; showing well deserved respect to those in the armed forces who are no longer with us.

"It honors a lot of people who gave up their life, and people that are now serving for the same reason, and that's why we come out and do this. It is very powerful, these people understand that they couldn't be here without people like us, so I'm glad to see them turn out and support what's going on," said Timothy Patanelli, Army and National Guard veteran.

Several different groups from all over Elkhart County came out to show their support, and take part in a parade that's considered an honor to march in.

"I enjoy being part of a community, and that's one thing I learned in the military, is to be part of the community you're in, and it's nice to honor also some of the older guys. I think young people that serve need to be reminded that we appreciate everything that they do," said David Simmons, 14-year US Army veteran.
