YOUR VOICE, YOUR VOTE: Tracking Marshall County prosecutor primary election
UPDATE: Joseph Morris has won the Marshall County prosecutor primary race.
ORIGINAL STORY: MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. -- In Marshall County, incumbent prosecutor Nelson Chipman Jr. is not running for re-election, which means either Joe Morris or Nicholas Langowski will be taking the open seat.
Morris is an attorney of around three decades, and he says he feels the prosecutor's office hasn't been connecting as well with local law enforcement and that he's been making calls to try and bridge that gap.
"We've lost a little bit as far as supporting law enforcement, I think they feel at times as though the prosecutor's office treats them like they're employees, that they are not an important partner, and I have been spending the time meeting with both of the sheriffs candidates, meeting with local chiefs of police, lots of veteran officers, asking them what can we do to make the interactions better, what can we do to make our cooperations better, what can we do to make law-enforcement work better in our county," said Morris.
Langowski is challenging Morris for the prosecutor position. He's the current chief deputy of the Marshall County prosecutor's office and says holding people who commit crimes accountable is at the top of his list of priorities, with stronger outcomes.
"When we file a charge, that’s the charge we’re going for it on. We don’t typically plead off of things, we don’t try to plead things down, when we have accused someone of committing a certain type of offense, it’s our job to prove that offense, and that is our job, is to hold them accountable for committing that offense in harming the public, harming victims, what have you," said Langowski.
