Will snow return to Michiana in March?

NOW: Will snow return to Michiana in March?

It's hard to believe it's only been about a week ago that parts of Michiana picked up ten inches of snow. However, thanks to a warm stretch of weather, the only surviving snow on the ground is found in big piles in parking lots.

Now, the question for Michiana is: are we going to add any additional snow to those piles, or is our snow season over?

Typically, March brings around seven inches of snow to South Bend. While it's rare for bigger snow events to find us after March 1, the average last one-inch snowfall occurs around March. So, historically speaking, we're likely to get some more snow.

It's a fool's errand to count out winter in this part of the country. However, most indications point to mild weather through most of March. The exception, of course, will be this upcoming weekend. Highs will only be in the 20s and 30s with some snow showers possible Saturday. If snow does accumulate, it will be gone by Monday, and rain showers and temperatures in the 50s will return by the middle of next week.

Because of warmer temperatures and a higher sun angle, snow that occurs past March 1 is typically less impactful than its winter counterpart.

Given all this information, my expert advice is to put the snowblower away but keep the shovel ready (just in case).
