Third annual Willie Weeks Memorial Classic Car and Truck Show benefits charity

Elkhart Moose Lodge 599

Elkhart Moose Lodge 599 will host the third annual Willie Weeks Memorial Classic Car and Truck Show on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with all proceeds benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities Michiana.

Lodge officials say the show is held in honor of Willie Weeks, a local car enthusiast, Navy Veteran, and supporter of local charities, who passed away on February 21, 2021.

The event has made a point of supporting a different local charity each year.

“This is an example of how our local community continues to support our mission of caring for families with sick and injured children,” said RMHC Michiana Chief Executive Officer Kierstin Eifler. “We are proud to call Michiana our home thanks to the generous spirit of this community.”

Food vendors, Ron’s River Dogs and Hay Huey Mexican Cuisine, will provide food at the event, and Michael Carluccio will give a special music performance.

A live DJ will also be present.

Vehicle registration is $20.

The first 100 participants will also receive a free T-shirt and dash plaque. T-shirt sizes include large, extra-large, and double extra-large.

There will also be games and trivia. Free coffee and donuts will be provided as well.

Trophies will be awarded for first, second, and third place, plus Best in Show and more.

Classic car and truck categories from 1900 to 1999 will be judged for the awards.

Registration still open for 'Bowling 4 The Beacon' fundraiser Saturday

The Beacon

The Beacon announced it will host the fundraiser, "Bowling 4 the Beacon," on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. to support the non-profit's many programs which benefit South Bend's west side.

Organizers invite community members to an evening of strikes, spares, and community impact at Chippewa Bowl.

Registration is currently open for various categories of participants.

An individual bowler is $99, while a team of bowlers up to six is $499, and 10 lanes will be available for bowling families, one to two adults with up to four kids, for $99.

You can select your option and register here.

Registration includes up to three games of bowling, shoe rental, pizza, non-alcoholic beverages, desserts, and a gift bag for each bowler.

For over 15 years, Beacon officials say The Beacon Resource Center's programs have made a tangible impact, including the Police Athletic League Boxing Mentoring Program, support for the formerly incarcerated, summer educational programs, and community partnerships, like collaborating with organizations like the South Bend Roller Derby to cultivate a sense of belonging and unity.

Mishawaka Historical Museum

Those with a love for all things spooky will appreciate the Mishawaka Historical Museum's newest walking tour that will take participants through the nearly 200-year-old Mishawaka City Cemetery.

The tour will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10. at the cemetery that was established on the southwest corner of Main and Jefferson in 1838.

According to the historical museum, the cemetery is the final resting place of many of Mishawaka's most prominent settlers, businessmen, and their families.

"The walking tour, led by Mishawaka historian laureate Pete De Kever, will visit 20 graves and last approximately one hour and twenty minutes," organizers said. "Mishawaka City Cemetery is the final resting place for over 6,300 people, including many of the city’s prominent industrial and business leaders, pioneer families, and veterans of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World Wars I and II. Their history is the history of Mishawaka in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries."

The tour is free, and no preregistration is required.
