Two Niles house fires

NILES, Mich. -- Niles firefighters had quite a situation on their hands when two abandoned houses caught fire.

It happened on North 4th Street around 10 Thursday morning.

When fire crews got there, the home was taken over by flames. As they prepared to fight the flames, they noticed the house next door also was on fire.

Right now, both fires are under investigation.

"I'm sure it's going to take a long time for us to get into this and make sure we really understand what happened, we'll work hard to do that," said Larry Lamb, Niles city fire chief.

Firefighters believe both homes were in early stages of renovation.
