Three arrested during operation targeting vehicle thefts

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Deputies have arrested three people who are suspected of breaking into a vehicle in the parking lot of a hotel Wednesday morning, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies who were on a proactive crime detail investigating thefts from vehicles, observed three suspects removing items from a vehicle parked in the lot of a hotel in the 27000 block of CR 24 just after 4 a.m.

The suspects left the scene in a maroon minivan, reports said.

The deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but it did not stop, reports said.

The pursuit continued through St. Joseph County and ended at Magnolia and Edward streets in South Bend.

All three occupants were taken into custody.

  • Henry Sims, 54, is facing a preliminary charge of theft.
  • Peter Mason, 49, is facing preliminary charges of theft and resisting law enforcement.
  • Keith Boyd, 48, is facing a preliminary charge of theft.
