ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Homicide Unit announced Thursday that the suspect in the deadly Daylite Inn shooting earlier this week has been identified.
The shooting, which occurred at 2820 Cassopolis St., remains under investigation, but a main suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Nicholas Stanley.
The victim of the murder 35-year-old Allen L. Cogswell, of Elkhart.
"During the course of this investigation, it was found that Allen Cogswell is a convicted sex offender and was released from prison in May of 2025," the ECHU said.
"According to the probable cause affidavit associated with that case, as well as additional investigation of court records, one Nicholas Stanley is related to the victim of that case."
Court documents indicate the ECHU reviewed surveillance video from Menards at 601 E. Windsor Avenue, and the Red Roof Inn at 2902 Cassopolis Street, which are both near the Daylite Inn.
"On the surveillance videos, [I] observed a maroon SUV arrive at Menards at approximately 12:31 a.m.," the report states.
"A white male wearing a dark shirt with red or orange stripes on both arms and lettering on the back of the shirt was observed walking south from the aforementioned maroon SUV toward the Daylite Inn. The same white male is also observed on the surveillance video from the Red Roof Inn. The same white male is later observed running to the maroon SUV from the area of the Daylite Inn at approximately 12:53 a.m. and leaving the area."
The next day, on June 24, the Flock system, which is a network of license plate reading cameras that are installed throughout Elkhart County, caught a maroon Ford Explorer with Indiana registration heading south on S.R.19 (Cassopolis Street) from North Shore Drive at roughly 12:27 a.m.
That location is about two minutes from the site of the shooting.
The vehicle was registered to a Bruce Stanley of 304 Northern Lites Drive in Middlebury, and it was learned that his son, Nicholas Stanley, also resides there.
"A comparison of Nicholas's Indiana BMV photograph to surveillance video captured from the Red Roof Inn appear to be Nicholas Stanley," the ECHU said.
When interviewed, Stanley told authorities the last he knew, Cogswell was still in prison.
Detectives with the ECHU interviewed Bruce Stanley on June 24. During this interview, it was learned that both Bruce and Nicholas aware of the room that Allen was staying in.
"Furthermore, Bruce confirmed that a shotgun was missing from their shared residence," the ECHU said.
Stanley has been charged with one count of murder and his next hearing is set for July 3.
